in residence: june 24 - july 1 The Public Theater's Emerging Writers Group will return to Vineyard Arts Project for a week-long writers' retreat. Now in its fourth year, the Emerging Writers Group is a program that targets playwrights at the earliest stages of their careers and nurtures their artistic growth by providing necessary resources and support. During their stay on Martha's Vineyard, the playwrights will take advantage of the solace and resources of Vineyard Arts Project to work on their individual, ongoing writing projects. The Emerging Writers Group is a component of The Public Writers Initiative, which creates a fertile community and fosters a web of supportive artistic relationships across generations. Time Warner is the Founding Sponsor of The Public Writers Initiative. The Public Theater (Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director) was founded by Joseph Papp in 1954 and is now one of the nation's preeminent cultural institutions, producing new plays, musicals, and productions of classics at its downtown headquarters and at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The Public's mandate to create a theater for all New Yorkers continues to this day onstage and through extensive outreach and education programs. Each year, over 250,000 people attend Public Theater-related productions and events at six downtown stages, including Joe's Pub, and Shakespeare in the Park. The Public has won 42 Tony Awards, 149 Obies, 40 Drama Desk Awards and four Pulitzer Prizes. www.publictheater.org.Overview
